NE charity wins £160k contract to help people in North Tyneside

A NORTH EAST charity has won a contract worth nearly £160,000 to help people suffering from addiction problems in North Tyneside.

The contract will enable Norcare, a housing support charity, to help more than 40 people across North Tyneside to deal with issues that arise out of their addiction problems such as homelessness, debt and breakdown of family life.

The contract was awarded by Supporting People, the government programme which helps vulnerable people to find and maintain a roof over their heads, and it will see Norcare employ an extra two members of staff.

It will provide a range of support needed by these vulnerable people such as help applying for housing, and help for those who have fallen behind with rent payments. It will also provide support for people in fear of being evicted to stop them ending up homeless and living rough on the street.

It will also respond to individual needs, offering health advice and support, laying on small social events to help free recovering addicts from their isolation, and setting up workshops to help them learn life skills such as cooking, literacy or sewing.

Shirley English, team leader at Norcare who is heading up the new programme, said: “This is a group of society that often gets neglected. Norcare aims to provide comprehensive support to help these people back to independent living.

“In addition to the other support we are offering, we have set up a drop-in service in conjunction with the addiction programme, Project Answer, to offer practical help with filling in housing application forms and any other advice needed.”

The new contract will make use of Norcare’s new Apple Tree scheme which combines health support, volunteer mentoring and skills development services to complement the housing support services it offers.

The charity has also secured up to three new properties from social landlords NomadE5 in which it will provide floating support to individuals.

Norcare will be working with a number of partners to deliver its support including council addiction services, addiction support groups and housing providers.
