Lottery Reward for Norcare Volunteers

A TEAM of volunteers will be crossing their fingers and hoping their numbers come up after a charity found a novel way to reward them for their efforts. Norcare, which provides support for vulnerable people across the North East, will present the helpers with a certificate of thanks and a lucky dip lottery ticket at this Sunday’s Community Green Festival in Newcastle. The gesture will give the team a one in 14 million chance of scooping a multi-million-pound pot in the draw on Saturday, June 16. The presentation is being made at the end of National Volunteer’s Week which celebrates the tremendous efforts volunteers make for charities across the country. In keeping with the Green Festival’s environmental credentials, Norcare is also planting a tree at its Kairos facility on the outskirts of County Durham. The tree, donated to the charity by Pegasus Electrical, is the start of an annual environmental pledge Norcare is making to plant trees at its sites across the North East. Norcare is one of the largest North East providers of supported housing for vulnerable people including victims of domestic violence, recovering alcoholics and ex-offenders. Its primary role is to provide them with the skills to lead ordinary lives. Norcare’s volunteers play an important role helping to teach life skills such as cooking, cleaning, decorating and gardening as well as social skills by helping them to meet new friends. Nicola Crawford, Norcare volunteer co-ordinator, said: “Our job would be so much tougher without the army of volunteers who willingly give some of their free time to help others. They are a fantastic group of people who bring a lot of happiness to people who are having a hard time. “As a charity, we cannot afford to buy lavish gifts for our volunteers but we think each of them is one in a million and who knows, the gesture of buying a lottery ticket may bring a massive thank you to one of our team.” The Newcastle Community Green Festival is the UK’s biggest free community environmental festival and a celebration of the environment, arts and music. The festival began in the mid 1990s and aims to raise awareness of environmental issues by providing creative and educational environmental, arts and music based activities for the benefit of the local community.
