South TynesideSouth Tyneside Tenancy Support Service This service was established in December 2002 as a development in partnership working with Northumbria National Probation Service. Originating from a service that covered Gateshead to South Shields, this service was enhanced and increased to form separate services areas and meets the needs of 12 clients at a time. The service supports men and women, aged 18 and over, who require housing or may currently have their own Local Authority or Housing Association accommodation. All referrals to the service will have a history of offending, sometimes coupled with drug or alcohol misuse issues. Referrals must be made and supported by Northumbria Probation Service Officers. Individuals referred to this service will be at risk of losing their accommodation or will be unable to access housing due to their inability to manage their responsibilities or the tasks associated with their tenancy such as budgeting and clearing debts, this may put them in danger of re-offending and breaching the terms of any probation order they may be under. In some cases individuals without accommodation may require help, advice or support to resolve breaches of previous tenancies to gain new housing. Tenancy Support in South Tyneside aims to enable clients to gain or maintain their own secure tenancy. As well as providing a structured, planned support service tailored to the individuals needs. The service supports individuals to maintain a crime free way of life and successfully complete a programme of support meetings, addressing the needs of each individual within a time-frame of six months to a year. Established in 1996 there are 13 units of self contained accommodation, mostly one bedroom flats but with a limited provision of two bedroom houses. These properties are all located in the borough of South Tyneside. The accommodation is managed by Norcare in partnership with two Housing Associations. Each property is fully furnished and equipped with a cooker, fridge and washing machine. The service supports single men and women, aged 18 and over, who have no dependents. Each client will also have experienced mental ill health. Referrals must have a local connection and be referred by a mental health support service, including Social Services, Psychiatrists or Community Psychiatric Nurses. People referred to the service will have experienced mental ill health which has led to their hospitalisation and they may be receiving ongoing out-patient support or treatment. They will also be without accommodation following their release from hospital or may be housed inappropriately in a hostel or without support. Those in need of support will have lost, or never had, the self-confidence and skills needed to live independently in their own accommodation. Each successful applicant will have expressed a wish to use the service to meet their needs. SAIL endeavours to provide good quality, well maintained safe and secure housing together with a structured, planned support service tailored to each individuals needs. Norcare staff support clients in maintaining their mental well being and accessing additional support that will complement any support they already receive, with a view to successfully completing a programme of support within a time frame of two years or less. The service aims to address long term goals by assisting each service user to secure their own full, permanent tenancy or long term accommodation appropriate to their ongoing needs.
