GatesheadGateshead Tenancy Support Service (GTSS) This service is a 'floating' support scheme which assists up to 12 young people looking to live independently in Local Authority accommodation, private tenancies or other appropriate supported accommodation. The scheme is managed in conjunction with Nomad Housing Association who have committed to designating six unfurnished single flats at any one time. Referrals to this service are normally by Social Service departments or other local voluntary sector agencies for young people aged 16 to 25. Many of the clients have left social service care or are homeless as a result of family breakdown. Regular structured support is offered in key work sessions which are tailored to each individuals needs. Support plans may include assisting with housing and welfare benefit applications independent living skills, help with rent arrears and practical assistance with moving. For further information telephone: (0191) 229 9108 South of the This is a service for men and woman, aged 18 and over, who have offending behaviour backgrounds ranging from petty offending to more serious crimes, which can include sexual or violent offending. Referrals are normally from Northumbria Probation Service, bail hostels and custodial establishments. Clients are either homeless or in housing difficulties, often as a direct result of being taken into custody. Many have chaotic lifestyles which often involves substance misuse. We work in partnership with Gateshead Borough Council and can offer trial tenancies for up to 12 people at any one time. Clients are placed in their own single properties which can become permanent upon the successful completion of their support plan. During this period they must work closely with their Housing Support Officer to manage their flat and not return to offending behaviour. This arrangement is proving very successful and most clients go on to lead more stable and satisfying lifestyles. Clients must be aged 18 or over and are normally referred by Northumbria Probation Service, bail hostels or local prisons. We have 11 single properties as well as a men only property which can accommodate four people, each person having their own bedroom and shared communal areas. Clients must attend weekly key work sessions where an individual support plan is drawn up to tailored for their own specific needs. As we have a four bed house, this is often used as a feeder service prior to someone moving into one of our single properties or their own tenancy. Five furnished single properties are provided by Gateshead Borough Council. These can become permanent housing as the Council will accept these residents as their own if they have a successful stay with us and then offer us replacements. The service is open to self statutory and voluntary agency referrals throughout the Borough of Gateshead. All of the clients have considerable problems with substance misuse and this can impact significantly upon their ability to find suitable and stable accommodation. Other issues may include family and partnership breakdown, mental ill health, self harm and offending behaviour. Many have spent time in custodial or institutional care. We offer one to one key work sessions tailored each individuals needs with the primary aim of enabling clients to acquire and maintain their own tenancies whilst addressing issues regarding substance abuse and where necessary offending behaviour.
