NewcastleCumberland House Cumberland House is a large listed building to the west of Newcastle City Centre. This service provides temporary supported accommodation for females only, who are aged 16 and over. There are bed spaces for up to 12 women in five shared flats; each client has their own bedroom. Statutory, voluntary and self referrals are welcomed. Most women living in the scheme have a wide range of backgrounds and issues. Many are vulnerable, most have experienced a breakdown with a partner or a family, often with some form of abuse or have children in care, often resulting in self harm including drug and alcohol misuse and offending behaviour. We find that the diversity of the clients works extremely well and that they learn from each others experiences with productive results, often leaving peer groups behind and meeting new people and making positive relationships. Support and advice is available 24 hours a day. A support plan is developed with every service user and key working sessions take place which are tailored to the individual woman's situation. Sessions include housing and welfare applications and appeals, advice on budgeting, general independent living skills and a resettlement service for up to six months after moving on. For further information telephone: (0191) 230 2090 Statutory, voluntary and self referrals are accepted for men of all ages. Many of the men have had very chaotic lifestyles and have suffered family breakdown or have been involved in the criminal justice system. A history of drug and/or alcohol misuse and offending behaviour is not uncommon but this improves significantly with support and stable accommodation. One-to-one key work sessions take place to address each individual's needs and these may include help with housing and welfare applications, advice on budgeting and general independent living skills. For further information telephone: (0191) 272 3817 The aim of this service is to provide 'floating' support for single men and woman, aged 16 and over, who experience difficulties securing or maintaining an independent tenancy or are threatened with homelessness by their families because of problems with substance misuse. Referrals are welcomed from self, statutory and voluntary sector, the vast majority coming from the Local Authority Drug and Alcohol team and Housing Officers. All clients have a structured support plan, often with input from other agencies and they meet with their key worker on a one-to-one basis weekly. By providing one-to-one support, clients are assisted in securing and/or maintaining an independent tenancy, remaining in the family home, accessing specialist support or advice, applying for welfare benefits and addressing their substance misuse problem.
